Lake is a recreational area offering activities such as
kayaking, canoeing, and row boats, all great fun for the
family. Along the lakefront portion, there is the Town Lake
Hike and Bike Trail to walk, jog, or bicycle. The Hike and
Bike trail's surface is smooth and is mostly crushed granite
except for a few lengths of concrete, there are several
access points and the path goes by, through, or across
several Austin landmarks. There are a
number of music venues and events along the banks of Town
Lake and beautifully landscaped parks surrounding Town Lake.
Town Lake boasts 17 sports fields for baseball, football,
soccer, rugby, and volleyball.
The area on the south side of Town Lake
includes Auditorium Shores, where many concert events
are held. The Congress Avenue bridge, in the vicinity of
Town Lake and downtown Austin, is the spring and summer home
to some 750,000 bats. It's the largest urban bat colony in
North America. The best bat views are in August when the
young pups join their mothers in the nightly flights. It can
take as long as 45 minutes for all the bats to exit the
bridge.
